Overview.

This 4 days Rwanda tour takes you to Akagera National Park, known for big game viewing, boat rides and a magical gorilla trekking adventure in Volcanoes national park.

It is a perfect Rwanda safari for those searching for a 2 in 1 African experience, and a great combination for wildlife and gorilla adventure in a single trip.

Highlights.

Day 1: Kigali city – Akagera national park.

Day 2: Game drive and boat cruise on Lake Ihema.

Day 4: Gorilla trekking. Transfer back to Kigali.

Meet and greet with our company representative at Kigali International Airport or at a hotel in Kigali.

Time permitting, you can do a short city tour in Kigali, to explore the city’s iconic historical features and museums, including Kigali genocide center, the Belgian monument and presidential palace museum. The guide / driver will then transfer you East wards, near the border with Tanzania.

The journey is approximately 110km taking about 2.5 hours’ drive to reach the park.

En route, the journey offers you beautiful scenery of rolling hills for which the country Rwanda is well known.

Arrive in Akagera national park and check in at the lodge, and spend the rest of the evening enjoying the views of this savannah park as well as Rwanda’s second biggest lake, Ihema.

Day 2: Game drive and boat cruise on Lake Ihema.

Following an early breakfast, you will go for a game drive to discover the Big 5 residents of Akagera national park. While on this morning game safari, look out for the early risers plus large predators including Lions, leopards and Hyenas. Other big mammals include Elephants, giraffes, Buffaloes, bush bucks, zebras, impalas, Oribi, cape elands and antelopes.

The game drive last between 3-4 hours, and return to the lodge thereafter for lunch. In the afternoon, go for a thrilling boat ride on the shimmering Lake Ihema to search for the various water animals associated with this lake, including Hippos, giant crocodiles and a collection of water birds like the papyrus Gonolek, African fish eagle, and the elusive shoebill stork.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes national park. Visit the Ib’yiwachu cultural village.

In the morning after breakfast, begin the journey to the Northern Province of Rwanda to the Volcanoes national park. This is Rwanda’s most unique and famous park, and a habitat for the sought after mountain gorillas.

The journey from Akagera to Volcanoes national park takes about 4 hours but filled with beautiful sceneries, expansive tea and sugar plantations, bustling Enroute towns and a profusion of romantic hills and elevated plateaus.

Upon reaching Volcanoes NP, you will spend the rest of your evening enjoying cultural performances at the famous Ib’yiwachu cultural village in the outskirts of Volcanoes national park.

This place presents impressive highlights of a typical traditional Rwandan village, and a rich culture that has existed for centuries. It also gives the visitors great opportunities to meet the local people in their daily life activities, portraying how they  produce the local banana beer(Urwagwa) from the primary stage to the finished product, visitors can even have a taste of the local beer.

After this encounter, retreat back to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: Gorilla trekking. Transfer back to Kigali.

On this long – awaited day of gorilla trekking, wake up to a delicious breakfast at 6:30am; get your packed lunch ready and head to the park headquarters for pre – trek briefing . By 8:00am, begin your gorilla trek experience.  You will be assigned a specific ranger and allocated a particular gorilla group to track.

A gorilla trekking expedition is quite tedious but truly impressive when you finally meet these gentle giants face to face. You’ll see them in families as they carry on with their day-to-day activities; mothers caring for the young, juveniles capering as well as feeding.

Visitors are required to maintain a good distance while they watch the gorillas, and are encouraged to turn off flash lights on cameras as they capture gorilla photos and videos.

This gorilla trekking adventure lasts for approximately two to six hours, depending on the movement of the gorillas as well as the seasons.

After tracking, eat your picnic lunch / snacks as you retreat from this adventure – filled experience and head back to the lodge, just in time to check out and begin your drive back to Kigali city.

Driver / guide will either drop you at the hotel or airport for departure flight, marking the end of this epic 4 days gorillas and wildlife safari in Rwanda.
