Murchison Falls Conservation Area is one of the oldest, and it is known as the largest protected area in Uganda. It is comprised of Murchison Falls National Park, Bugungu Wildlife Reserve, and Karuma Wildlife Reserve.

This is where the Nile explodes through a narrow gorge and cascades down to become a river whose banks are inhabited with hippos, crocodiles, waterbucks, and buffaloes.

The vegetation is characterized by savannah, riverine forest and woodland. This park is filled with wildlife and among them are lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, hartebeests, oribis, Uganda kobs, chimpanzees, and many bird species.

The park covers 5,663 sq.km of land which gives the animals plenty of space. The national park is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority

The Murchison Falls also referred to as the Kabarega Falls, is a waterfall found on the course of the great Nile.

On its journey to Murchison Falls, the water of the Nile forces its way through a narrow gorge, which is 7 meters wide and topples 43 meters below. This causes a thunderous roar forming a residual water stray that forms a beautiful rainbow, from here it then continues its westward into the Lake Albert.

The Lake Victoria outlet sends about 300 cubic meters per second or 11,000 ft³/s of water to these falls and all this volume squeezed through this gorge.

The park is located in the northern region of the Albertine Rift Valley. This is the area where the huge Bunyoro escarpment joins together into the vast Acholi plains.

The Delta area which forms part of Murchison Falls national park is the best place to see the rare shoebill stock. A boat cruise to the Delta area where the shoebills are sighted offers great opportunity to see hippos, crocodiles, lots of bird species among others.

How to Get to Murchison Falls National Park

Traveling to Murchison falls National Park is quite easy because the park is very accessible. It can be reached by a number of routes by road, and this takes an average of 5 hours from Kampala.

The main entry point into the country is Entebbe International airport, found about 26km from the Uganda Capital, Kampala.
